چکیده

Populations of the diamondback moth Plutella xylostella (L.) larvae from two locations : Ooty and Oddanchatram (Tamil Nadu State) were found to be infected by a granulosis virus (GV). The virus was highly pathogenic to P. xylostella larvae and was responsible for the collapse of laboratory colonies of the insect. Restriction endonuclease analysis of the viral DNA with Pst 1, Hind 3, Bam H1 and EcoR 1 showed similar profiles indicating that both the isolates of the GV are identical. Pst 1 produced the maximum number of 16 bands, Hind 3 showed 13 and Bam H1 and EcoR 1, both recorded 10 bands. The molecular weight of the viral DNA was found to be 64.05 ± 2.07 X 106 daltons. Results of bioassays showed that the GV was highly pathogenic to P. xylostella larvae with an LC50 of 5.89 occlusion bodies/ mm2 of leaf surface for the second instar larvae. The LT50 was 5.67 days for the highest dose of 2.8 X 104 OB/mm2 and it increased with decreasing concentration of the virus.

Insecticide resistance in diamondback moth (DBM), Plutella xylostella (L.): status and prospects for its management in India

Insecticide resistance and concomittant field failure to control the diamondback moth (DBM), Plutella xylostella were first recorded in 1968 in Punjab. Studies carried out in different states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, indicate that fenvalerate, quilnalphos and monocrotophos resistance are now ubiquitous in Plutella xylostella. In Tamil Nadu, the discriminating dose tec...

Deltamethrin resistance in some diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella populations in Iran

The diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella has been developed resistance to many groups of pesticides including of pyrethroids. The present study was conducted to evaluate the toxicity of deltamethrin on the third instar larvae of six populations of the pest using leaf dipping method. The results showed that different populations had different susceptibilities to deltamethrin. At the LC50 level,...

Insecticide resistance in diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.), in southern Australia

Synthetic pyrethroids have been the most widely used insecticide group for control of Plutella xylostella in southern Australia since the early 1980’s. Insecticide resistance in Australian populations of P. xylostella was first confirmed in Queensland in 1987. Since then, resistant populations have developed throughout southern Australia with reports of insecticide control failures coming from ...

Mannose phosphate isomerase isoenzymes in Plutella xylostella support common genetic bases of resistance to Bacillus thuringiensis toxins in Llpidopteran species.

A strong correlation between two mannose phosphate isomerase (MPI) isoenzymes and resistance to Cry1A toxins from Bacillus thuringiensis has been found in a Plutella xylostella population. MPI linkage to Cry1A resistance had previously been reported for a Heliothis virescens population. The fact that the two populations share similar biochemical, genetic, and cross-resistance profiles of resist...

The Pathogens of Diamondback Moth and Their Potential for its Control a Review

The larvae and less frequently the pupae of Plutella xylostella (L) are sometimes attacked naturally by pathogens, particularly two fungi of the family Entomophthoraceae, Erynia blunckii and Zoophthora radicans. Other pathogens recorded include one other entomophthoraceous fungus, a granulosis virus, one or possibly two nucleopolyhedrosis viruses and Bacillus thuringiensis var kurstaki. In the ...
